Strenght Training Programs
Our Baby Boomer population is growing, wellness providers are becoming more skilled in meeting the needs of our elders. We know that our elders need more not less when it comes to movement therapy programs. It’s not enough to modify the intensity or safety of their fitness programs. It’s also essential to understand how the mindset that older clients bring to a session—in this case a fear of falling and fear of being dependent on others.
Physiological Changes That Occur with Aging:
Associated with sedentary lifestyles.
Cardiovascular system decreases.
Muscular fitness/ strength plateaus through the fifth and/or sixth decade, and then declines rapidly thereafter.
Up to 2 to 3% loss of bone mass after menopause for women.
Loss of certain sensory sensations: eyesight, balance, and hearing that occur gradually with aging.
Tony Bryan wears many hats—friend, teacher, motivator, business owner and disciplinarian. Each of these “personalities” requires a basic understanding of the psychology of exercise adherence—getting his elder clients to show up, work hard and stay consistent. Challenging at first: FUN ALL THE TIME!
